Materials
Materials are defined by their physical and mechanical properties. These properties can be entered manually by the user or automatically calculated using correlations defined in the literature.
Physical Properties and Automatic Calculations
SETAF2018 can automatically calculate key soil properties based on basic physical input data.
When the following values are entered, the derived properties are generated by the software:
-
Natural unit weight (γₙ)
-
Water content (wₙ)
-
Unit weight of solids (γₛ)
Main parameters that can be calculated automatically from these values include:
-
Void ratio (e) and porosity (n)
-
Degree of saturation (Sᵣ)
-
Saturated unit weight (γsat)
-
Dry unit weight (γd)
-
Submerged unit weight (γ′)

Correlations for Mechanical Parameters
Mechanical soil parameters can be estimated using correlations defined in the literature, based on effective stress and physical data.
This approach provides fast parameter generation, especially during the preliminary design stage.
Examples of parameters that can be estimated using correlations include:
-
Soil shear strength parameters
-
Coefficient of consolidation and time-related properties
-
At-rest earth pressure coefficient (K₀)
-
Stiffness moduli and deformation parameters

Materials List and Layer-Based Management
Physical and mechanical properties of soil layers are managed through the Materials List.
Input data can be filtered based on the analysis type, allowing consistent material definitions across different projects.
-
Soil layer properties are entered by the user
-
Data can be automatically filtered depending on the analysis type
-
Correlations enable fast parameter generation

Deep Mixing and Jet Grouting Column Properties
Mix design material properties can be defined for columns constructed using deep mixing and jet grouting methods.
For the deep mixing method, the mix design can be performed based on the procedure recommended by the FHWA (Federal Highway Administration).
Within this scope, the unit weight of the mixture and the required slurry amount are calculated automatically.
Strength and physical properties of deep mixing columns can be estimated using the correlations specified by the FHWA.
Correlations are also available for calculating column properties for the jet grouting method.
